JEC certifies February 5th Special Election Results

WASHINGTON, DC – Students at the George Washington University voted today to increase the fee per credit hour dedicated directly to student organization funding from $1.00 to $1.50, the first adjustment of the levy since its inception in 1992. The university administration has also pledged a one to one match of this increase, thus doubling the amount of revenue available to the Student Association. This change will only affect students entering GW in the Fall of 2008 or later.

A formal press release and the certified election results are also available.

Of the 2926 votes cast, 1871 were cast in the affirmative and 1055 were cast in the negative. A full copy of the certified results can be found online at gwelection.com. The election took place entirely online and was met with widespread praise from the general student body.

“As a committee, we could not have been happier with the special election,” commented Joint Elections Committee chairman Benjamin Balter, “The election served as a field test for using the internet as a platform for online voting. Students were resoundingly receptive of the new process and we look forward to seeing the same fluidity with the general election at the end of the month.”

The Joint Elections Committee (JEC) is an independent body that administers student elections at the George Washington University. The JEC is comprised of two appointees from the Student Association, one appointee from the Marvin Center Governing Board, one appointee from Program Board, and one joint appointee from the three organizations listed above.
